Let’s pic(k) Steve!

Episode 10.08

Words by Alex O’Loughlin

I was surprised by a pretty good episode. I even enjoyed the second storyline.

But what was really excellent was Alex’s portrayal of Steve, a Steve still in shock, a devastated Steve, a Steve so full of hurt and pain. His Steve was kind of ‘reduced’ for a lack of a better word, he was more quiet, had a low voice and you could feel that Steve desperately tried not to lose it. It made me feel for him so much. The continuity was so very well done by Alex! Thank you, Mr. O’Loughlin. So I thought some quotes of the man himself would be very fitting for this episode. Hope you enjoy. ~leiCa

“I think really if there’s nothing out there in the dark, then once we’re dead we’re just dead and all religion, all spiritual belief, is redundant. So there has to be something else, or what’s the point? And if we accept that there has to be something … then there can be anything.”

‘So I don’t know how I feel, but I do know that we don’t get life on our terms. It’s life on life’s terms or not at all.’

“Would you like the same again or a v.o.e?”

“A Variation of Excellence”

“I’ve always done it with all of my heart. I don’t know how to do it any other way.”

“Never mind that the project you’re in isn’t good; shine as bright as you can. And find the truth.”

“I mean, without life experience, you can’t tell stories anyway.”

“Sometimes the planets align and give you just what you need.”

“I think I’m quite sensitive. Maybe it’s what allows me to be an actor.”

‘From the minute that woman walked out of my life, the only thing I’ve ever wanted is to have her back in it.’

“Sometimes there’s a glitch in the matrix. You just gotta find out if it’s a software problem or a hardware problem.”

“People who care about people inspire me.”

“I’m sure at a point in all of our lives, I don’t know about Gandhi, but for the rest of us, there’s a point for all of us where we need help.”

“We need someone to take our hand, and take us to the light, and point us in a direction.”

Maybe it is AOL’s humanness, his deep understanding of life and human values, his fine grasp on human interaction that makes the portrayal of ‘his’ characters so real? I think so.

See y’all next week…

Sam wanted you to know that unfortunately she’s got no time for a review this week. So this also would be the review…

(I disagree, lol, no review at all, but I was really impressed by what Alex did here.) leiCa

  1. LeiCa, you did a great job. Guess I tell you that every week. 😉
I agree that the episode was a lot better than I feared it would be.
Of course, there were some really stupid scenes in it, too. When will Five-0 to check someone before the trust someone? That was so stupid. Every idiot knew that the Agent was not quite right. 🙄
Anyway, it was an enjoyable episode.

    1. I was surprised that I enjoyed parts of it. McG was magnificent, and was in it more than I anticipated. But the blond snake was so clearly a snake that I was embarrassed for the whole damn team. That dude radiated snake. Every time he spoke, all I heard was “hisssssssss hisssssssss hisssssssss”. I think his forked tongue even showed here and there. Seriously.🤣

      1. Grace, I totally agree. The minute I saw him I was shaking my head knowing how many times we have been through this. At least Steve beat himself up for it. I mean, COME ON! And if they want to surprise us (hah) at least pick someone who doesnt look like he crawled out of the roach motel.

  2. Great choice to use Alex’s own words (and some of those he wrote for Steve) for this one.
It works well with what Alex created with Steve in mourning in this one.
In my opinion it was pitch perfect for somebody in Steve’s position.

  3. Thank you leiCa for these pic(k)s.
I was positively surprised about the way show (or Chi, as he wrote 10.08) addressed Steve’s mourning. Let’s hope the writers will revisit this SL, because in real life McG would be broken.

Where was Danny? Exhausted from the long flight to/from D.C. and from sleeping on the couch? 😉
Yes, we ALL know about the actor’s amended contract and I usually don’t care about his absence, but in this episode it was weird.

I agree with Sam’s observations. All in all the episode turned out better than I thought.

    1. I think Chi wrote the Grover family parts only. And I liked them.
Yes, the absence of Dannoying was weird. Not that I mind, but the actor’s part time work is another nail in the coffin of his character. Danny wasn’t there while his other friends have been around him, caring AND working.
Where was D? Probably still on the mainland, in Jersey maybe, because of his horrific ordeal of riding alongside of a mouth-breather he deserved some time off.

  4. LeiCa, I always love your captions, but you really hit the vibe perfectly on this week’s Let’s Pic(k)s. And I’m so tickled you referenced his VOE quote. I love that damn expression…it’s just so Alex.❤️❤️❤️😘

  5. Thank you leiCa! I love them all!
I didn’t have very high hopes for this episode. After last week’s perfection, I figured the writers would drop the ball. I’m glad I was proven wrong!😉 I loved the Steve parts of the episode and I even didn’t mind seeing some of Grover’s family.
Hoping for more continuity next episode.

  6. Sorry I am late to express my admiration of your photos and use of Alex’s words. My heart broke in the beginning, Steve is really taking this loss hard. But he does bounce back.
I agree that you could see the bad agent a mile away. The writers are lazy.
Thanks for your time and talent and choosing to share with us.

  7. Agree it was better than I expected. More McGrover would be lovely as he seems to understand Steve and there is a respect in their interactions. But I don’t need to see anymore of his family or anymore of anyone in the family named Williams.

McGarrett will likely spend the rest of his life asking himself “why” whenever he thinks of Doris and there really is no answer. I still think John and Joe died with their secrets and I wonder if any of that will come out as the season progresses. And if it does, will it just be more devastation to an already grieving son? Because no matter what sins Doris committed she was still his mother and nothing can change that.
